About IONS

Founded in 1973 by the Apollo astronaut Edgar Mitchell, the Institute of Noetic Sciences (IONS) is a non-profit research and educational organization committed to expanding our understanding of human possibility by investigating aspects of reality; mind, consciousness, and spirit—that include but go beyond physical phenomena. The word "noetic" which comes from the ancient Greek noetikos refers to inner knowing, a kind of intuitive consciousness that is, direct and immediate access to knowledge beyond what is available to our normal senses and the power of reason.  Noetic sciences are an integrative exploration into the nature and potentials of consciousness, using multiple ways of knowing, including intuition, feeling, reason, and the senses. Noetic sciences explore the inner cosmos of the mind; consciousness, soul, spirit and how it relates to the outer cosmos of the physical world. The Institute is not a spiritual association, political-action group, or a single-cause institute. Rather, the Institute of Noetic Sciences honours open-minded approaches and multiple ways of knowing, brings discernment to its work, and supports diverse perspectives on social and scientific matters.

About "Something Unknown... is Doing We Don’t Know What"

Is it possible that some people can read your mind? (Telepathy) or look into the future? (Clairvoyance) Why is it that some people can cure themselves while in the last stages of a deadly cancer? (Healing). Does mind over matter (Telekinesis) really exist, and if so, how do we explain this? People claim to see distant objects or places (Remote Viewing). Do they really see something? And where is the boundary between 'real' psychic powers and fraud? Can these miracles of the mind be explained?

These questions and more are explored and answered in this fascinating and quirky feature documentary "Something Unknown... is Doing We Don’t Know What" by Dutch filmmaker Renée Scheltema. The Big 5

The filmmaker discovers that psychological research demonstrates the existence of five major psychic abilities, called "The Big 5":

Precognition is an alleged psychic ability to predict the future. It sometimes comes as a vision, a mental flash or a dream.

Telepathyrefers to mind-reading or mind-to-mind communication. It literally means 'distant feeling'.

Clairvoyanceis the psychic ability to perceive remote places, objects or people. A scientific term for clairvoyance is 'Remote Viewing'.

Psychokinesis (PK) is the ability to move objects with the power of the mind only.

Healing is a spiritual practice that may afford gradual relief from pain or sickness, and sometimes brings about sudden 'miracle cures'.
